Do I sound negative! They did that!

Well now I'm Hungry!!

You Are a Powdered Devil's Food Donut

A total sweetheart on the outside, you love to fool people with your innocent image.

On the inside you're a little darker, richer, and more complex.

You're a hedonist who demands more than one pleasure at a time.

Decadent and daring, you test the limits of human indulgence.

What Donut Are You?

Long Weekend - GOOO!

So it was decided that this weekend would be a three day weekend due to a new holiday - Family Day - which coincidently coincides with the US holiday President's Day.  Funny how that works, eh?  Ah well, I'm not complaining - I actually get 3 days off in a row!  Good ol' holidays!  I've also got a 4 day work week next week because of the holiday, which is just as good as the holiday itself really.  Somehow, I seem to have at least temporarily weasled my way into a schedule of Monday-Fridays provided that all is going well at work.  Of course, the catch is that some weekends, if all is not going well, as was the case last weekend, I end up working Mon-Fri then Sat, Sun, and Mon-Fri which is just.. disgusting!  But there is hope of that nice 5 day work week!

Also, I'm not unofficially the deli manager so congratulations to me!  (Am on a two week trial/training period which is basically me not getting paid to manage the deli while I'm screwing things up and others are fixing them up for me!)

Deli Manager? Me?

So it seems that the young lady who is currently my manager in the deli will be stepping down, so to speak.  This is probably a good thing because, although I like the gal, there are times I could cheerfully stuff her full of ham and cheese and sell her to the nearest elderly couple as a specialty platter.

Now it just remains to be seen whether they hire a more mature, experienced manager, or promote yours truly into that glorious position.  Should be a good time either way, just more money for me if it's the latter!  The other perk to the manager position is the shift change - i can get up an hour later so, instead of being up at 6am, I can sleep in to a nice late 7am and maybe actually stay awake past 10pm at night!  So all fingers crossed that the transition goes smoothly one way or another!

Flies in February

Where do they come from?  I have about three in my apartment now, buzzing merrily about as they attempt to land on my food.  I thought I was imagining things at first - i know their lifespan is short and it's been below freezing for a couple months now.  But no indeed, there are definetly flies in my apartment.  I'd assume they come in on fruit or something but they don't look like exotic flies - I have an idea that kiwi fruit flies should look different from regular Canadian flies but I suppose they may not.

Now to begin the hunt for a fly-swatter in shops in Ontario in February... should be a great time.  The only really good thing being that shops seem to switch for the new season about 2 months before it is at all reasonable so I may have hope yet!  Perhaps I should just buy a ... flock?  herd?  ummm school?  of geckos from the pet shop and let them loose to eat my flies!

Snowstorms and more snowstorms!

Looking outside, it seems as though there is maybe only a foot of snow on the freshly plowed sidewalk.  The snowbanks on either side appear to have reached the four foot mark but I guess that's okay because they're only forcasting another six inches before midnight tonight... I was chatting with a friend online about my snow and he said to my absolute fury, "Oh wow.. I don't know what I'd do with my BBQ if we had snow here.. I've got a steak going atm.. brb"  Apparently he's in Florida and it was 17 degrees there (Celcius) at 7pm and he was kicking back on his porch with a beer and his BBQ...  perhaps if we all get together, we can roll him down a hill and call him "Frosty the Florida Snowman"  On the bright side, the winter hasn't been very cold so far.  It's mostly been 0 to -5 degrees Celcius which I'll take in a heartbeat over -40 or so!  I want a vacation somewhere warm though!  Was looking at the last minute flight deals again.. $500 all incl. for a 6 night stay sounds mightly good right now!!

More eaten keyboards and other electrical devices...

I may end up eating my guinea pig for dinner one day very soon!  I've added up her destruction bill and so far, she's worth almost $200 in eaten cords and electronics (that would be assuming I wasn't simply patching everything back up).  I tried the lemon juice trick even - where you coat the plastic covering the wires in lemon juice to prevent the animal from persisting when it tastes the sour juice.  Guess what?  My animal is one in a million - she loooves the juice!  So I spent 20 minutes washing it all off as thoroughly as possible - I'll be damned if I'm going to add flavor to her destructive meals.

You'd think I'd just stop letting her out of her cage but, since she's all by herself, I end up feeling a little guilty with her just staring at me like that.  I miss having an apartment full of fish and reptiles.  That's one thing they never do - the guilt stare.  And, if they*are* staring at you, it always gives you the feeling that they are wondering how many days your arm might last as a food item for them.

Speaking of reptiles, my turtle is slowly increasing in size - time to redo her little habitat and take some photos of that!

Almost February!

..Amazing!  The winter is flying by!  Guess that's the difference when you're in an apartment with more than one room, eh?  *shudder to think of this time last year*

Been playing scrabble a lot lately - looking for an online version that works well but I can't seem to find any that aren't for scrabble masters!  I always think to myself "Well, I'm pretty good at this.  How much better can they really be?"  And then the person I'm playing against plops down a 7 letter 63 point word on a triple word block and gets the bonus 50 points for using all their letters.  I think to myself... "Huh.. i guess they're THAT much better than me..."  But, it's a fun way to pass the time and actually use some vocabulary that I don'e normally use - I mean, how often does one use the word Quested in everyday use?  (Notice the 7 letters - that's a 50 point bonus, baby!)

Fire Alarms and Deli Meat

Bet you wouldn't have thought that these two items could fit together snugly?  Well guess what?  They sure can!

If you've read my older posts, you're aware that I work in a deli, mostly serving lunch meats and cold salads etc.  Well last week, there was something wrong with our fire alarm system and the silly buzzer alarm kept going off.  This was especially irritating because the buzzer is directly above the meat slicer and is INCREDIBLY LOUD!!

It was, however, interesting as well as irritating.  The reason it was interesting was that every time my fire alarm went off, the customers in the store looked up to see where the alarm was coming from and, instead of rushing the other way, away from my huge industrial oven, my two fryers, my three hot cases, full of electrical charge, they instead rushed towards it.  You may think, “Well of course, they were rushing over to find out if there was a problem!”   But you would be wrong.  They were actually rushing over to buy their lunch meats and then to leave the store.  Within a matter of 20 minutes of the alarm going off, I would have served every customer in the store, and the ones who entered the store after the alarm was already going off, would pause for a moment in the entry and, upon not finding the way blocked off, make a dash for the meat counter to get their meat as quickly as possible in the face of this potentially life threatening emergency.

This situation has made me wonder… if there ever is a fire in the Deli, and the 2 fryers full of 10 gallons of propane heated oil do not immediately explode, do I have any chance of escape?  Or will I simply be mobbed on my way out by angry customers, furious that the slicer of their meat is not using the last precious moments of her life to get them their 96 grams of Blackforest Ham?  After all, it IS on sale this week…

...And so i was marked as spam...

...Another week almost over, this one not much different from any other - I went to work, came home, my normal routine EXCEPT I was marked as spam by... get this... my father's email provider!  Now, I know that internet security is a big thing for these folks, but come on!  I send a few emails in a day to my father and I become spam!  I had to laugh - the response they sent to his inquiry on how to remove my email from the list of spam was that I should refrain (actually, they spelled this incorrectly in their email, turning it into a completely different word) from sending emails to him for a period of time and then try not to send as frequently.  Also, there were complaints by them of my lack of subjects and quantity of attachments!  Good thing somebody is monitoring it, otherwise we might be able to communicate any way we wish!
